Emerging Issues in Medical Ethics

This unit synthesizes foundational ethical principles and applies them to complex contemporary issues including research in special populations, stem cell and genetic research, patient-centered ethical communication, landmark cases, and anticipated future challenges. Students will integrate prior learning to evaluate regulations, informed consent processes, and institutional policies so they can recommend ethically defensible practices in clinical and administrative settings.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations affecting research involving special populations (e.g., minors, pregnant people, prisoners, cognitively impaired individuals) and design compliant consent/assent and protection strategies.
• Evaluate ethical arguments, risk–benefit assessments, and oversight mechanisms related to stem cell and genetic research and recommend institutional policies that align with current standards and patient protections.
• Apply patient-centered communication and shared decision-making techniques to address common ethical issues in clinical encounters, documenting appropriate disclosures, consent steps, and conflict-resolution approaches.
• Demonstrate the ability to synthesize lessons from high-profile medical ethics cases and forecast emerging ethical challenges, producing evidence-based recommendations for administrative practice or policy updates.
