Introduction to Culinary Careers

This unit introduces students to the culinary arts profession, the variety of workplaces where culinary professionals are employed, and the pathways for entering the field. Students will explore training options, evaluate culinary programs, and learn foundational expectations for working in restaurant environments to prepare for deeper skill development in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the scope of the culinary arts profession by identifying career pathways, common job titles, and typical workplace settings using industry and labor market data
• Evaluate differences between culinary school and on-the-job training by comparing curriculum, credentialing, time-to-competency, cost, and employment outcomes to determine personal fit
• Apply established selection criteria (accreditation, program length, cost, work-based learning opportunities, and placement rates) to compare at least three culinary education or training options and justify a recommended choice
• Demonstrate understanding of restaurant operations and professional expectations by describing front-of-house and back-of-house roles, typical work schedules, safety and hygiene requirements, and creating a personal action plan for entering the restaurant workforce
