Responsible Wildlife and Nature Travel

This unit builds on foundational sustainable travel concepts and prepares students to make ethical, legal, and culturally respectful decisions when engaging with wildlife, natural environments, and host communities. Students will learn to identify reputable operators and experiences, avoid practices that harm animals or disrespect local customs, and select nature-based adventures that minimize environmental impact.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze legal, ethical, and cultural factors that affect souvenir purchases, wildlife interactions, photography, and other traveler choices to ensure compliance with local laws and respect for communities and species.
• Apply evaluation criteria to select reputable wildlife tours and nature-based activities (e.g., birding, diving, botanical experiences, hiking, dark-sky viewing, sailing) that prioritize animal welfare and environmental stewardship.
• Demonstrate culturally competent engagement with First Nations and local communities, including respectful communication, consent practices for photography, and support for community-led tourism enterprises.
• Evaluate travel scenarios and develop an action plan containing at least three specific strategies to avoid unethical animal experiences, reduce ecological impact, and promote conservation while traveling.
