Crime Types, Theories, and Responses

This unit examines major categories of crime, underlying causes and theories of criminal behavior, and the criminal justice system’s investigative, prosecutorial, and correctional responses. Students will compare offenses from homicide to white‑collar and organized crime, evaluate risk and social costs, and prepare for applied casework and policy discussions in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and classify major categories of crime (e.g., homicide, property crime, assault/battery, white‑collar crime, drug offenses, terrorism, and organized/ethnic‑based crime) using factual elements, typical motives, and common investigative challenges
• Evaluate sociological, biological, and feminist explanations of criminal behavior (including strain theory and genetic influences) and assess how social conditions and cultural mores shape offending and victimization patterns
• Apply criminal justice processes and roles—investigation techniques, prosecution and defense strategies, state court jurisdiction, custody placement, juvenile versus adult treatment, and correctional officer responsibilities—to hypothetical case scenarios
• Demonstrate the ability to assess the costs and benefits of crime prevention and response (including interagency coordination, special tools/techniques, and ethical issues in prosecuting white‑collar and organized crime) and recommend evidence‑based prevention or intervention strategies
