Theories, Courts, and Corrections

This unit connects criminological theory to real-world crime types and the justice system by examining causes of criminal behavior, forensic roles, courtroom functions, and correctional responses. Students will synthesize theory with case studies and procedures to prepare for applied practice and advanced topics in the final unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze major criminological theories (e.g., rational choice, social learning, social control, peacemaking, biological explanations, leftist realism) and evaluate their explanatory power for at least three categories of crime such as hate crimes, sexual offenses, and organized crime.
• Apply forensic and investigative concepts by mapping evidence types and investigative steps to the roles of forensic scientists and computer forensic specialists in at least two case studies (e.g., Zodiac Killer, cybercrime incidents).
• Demonstrate understanding of courtroom and correctional processes by constructing and explaining flowcharts that show the roles and decision points for trial judges, appellate judges, federal courts, plea agreements, probation, and juvenile proceedings including transfer to adult court.
• Evaluate current victim services, prevention strategies, and correctional challenges (including drug abuse prevention, victim advocacy expansion, prison system issues, and mental health/rehabilitation approaches) and propose two evidence-based policy or program recommendations to improve outcomes.
