Advanced Investigation and Justice Processes

This capstone unit examines complex investigations, courtroom procedures, offender accountability, victim advocacy, and justice policy through historical case studies and contemporary practice. Students apply investigative and analytical skills, evaluate responses across adult and juvenile systems, and explore careers and ethical issues in criminal justice.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze high-profile and cold-case investigations (e.g., Blake, Wales, Black Dahlia, Hoffa, Tupac/Biggie) to identify investigative methods, evidentiary challenges, intelligence-gathering techniques, and factors that affected case outcomes
• Apply criminal procedure and courtroom knowledge by preparing and participating in simulations of pretrial hearings, motions to suppress, trial roles, and sentencing processes while explaining victims’ rights and due-process protections
• Demonstrate interdisciplinary criminal justice skills by conducting basic crime and gang intelligence analyses, creating victim-advocacy or restorative-justice plans, and recommending appropriate community supervision or intervention strategies (probation, juvenile counseling)
• Evaluate policy, ethical, and rehabilitative approaches—including juvenile justice trends, restorative justice models, organized-crime suppression, and the death-penalty debate—and formulate evidence-based recommendations for practice or reform
