Advanced Drone Operations and Compliance

This unit advances students’ operational knowledge of small unmanned aircraft systems with emphasis on airspace classification and authorization, night and low-visibility operations, safety and maintenance practices, and data capture/editing workflows. It prepares learners to plan compliant missions, troubleshoot technical problems, and study for regulatory exams while integrating human factors and risk mitigation strategies.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze airspace categories (including Class D and Class E), special-use areas, and METAR/TAF weather information to determine when airspace authorization, waivers, or operational restrictions are required and to prepare compliant flight authorizations
• Apply night-flight, twilight, and low-visibility best practices — including visual illusions, lighting/remote identification requirements, and crew resource management techniques — to develop safe, compliant night or marginal-visibility flight plans
• Demonstrate preflight and postflight procedures including GPS/calibration checks, LiPo battery handling, maintenance logging, connectivity troubleshooting, activation of crash-safety features, and appropriate recordkeeping
• Evaluate mission requirements for imagery and video (camera modes, active tracking, editing workflow) and operational risk (warranties, insurance, Part 107 knowledge) to produce a comprehensive, legally compliant mission plan
