Sailing Foundations and Safety

This unit introduces fundamental seamanship for recreational small-boat sailing, emphasizing boat anatomy, safety, basic navigation, wind and weather assessment, knots, anchoring, docking, and emergency response. It builds on introductory knowledge and prepares students for more advanced sailing maneuvers, navigation, and environmental stewardship in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common sailboat components, points of sail, and running/standing rigging to identify their functions and implications for vessel handling and maintenance.
• Demonstrate core safety and emergency procedures including correct life jacket selection/use, boarding and climbing aboard, overhand knot tying, capsize recovery on a dinghy, and completion of pre-departure safety checklists.
• Apply wind and weather assessment techniques—identifying wind direction/apparent wind, estimating wind strength, interpreting telltales, and conducting a pre-sailing weather briefing—to make go/no-go and sail-trim decisions.
• Evaluate anchoring, mooring, and docking options and develop basic navigation plans using buoys, aids to navigation, and common-sense routing to minimize risk and prepare for advanced seamanship instruction.
