This unit surveys the historical and contemporary waves of technology — from the mainframe era to generative AI — and examines how innovations in agtech, climate solutions, and public‑private collaboration shape communication practice. Students will connect technological change to ethical, societal, and storytelling strategies, laying a foundation for later, more technical units in the pathway.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze the seven waves of technology, including the mainframe era, and produce a chronological map that links each wave to key industry and societal impacts
- Evaluate the societal, ethical, and environmental implications of emergent technologies (e.g., generative AI, agtech, climate tech) and propose at least three mitigation or enhancement strategies relevant to digital communicators
- Apply principles of storydoing to create a one-page strategic brief that aligns a technology-for-good initiative with public-private collaboration opportunities
- Demonstrate leadership and legacy planning by developing a reflective action plan that identifies steps to embed responsible, mission-driven technology practices within an organization
