Introduction to Coding and Web Fundamentals

This unit introduces foundational coding concepts, basic web technologies (HTML and CSS), and an overview of general-purpose languages (Ruby, Python) while guiding students through a simple app planning and setup process. Students will practice viewing and organizing web content for desktop and mobile, learn a repeatable coding process, and evaluate resources and language choices to prepare for subsequent development units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze fundamental concepts of code by distinguishing between markup (HTML), styling (CSS), and general-purpose programming languages (Ruby, Python) and describing their typical uses
• Demonstrate the ability to display, test, and troubleshoot web pages on desktop and mobile devices and organize HTML content and CSS rules to produce clear, responsive layouts
• Apply a structured coding process to decompose a location-based offer app into functional steps, create a development plan, and prepare the environment and tools needed to begin coding
• Evaluate learning-to-code resources and programming languages, justify a selected language for a given project, and articulate how coding skills support career and personal goals
