This unit introduces foundational WordPress skills including site planning, basic administration, content creation, and safe visual customization. Students will set up domains and hosting options, navigate and configure the dashboard, create organized content with categories, media, and blocks, and begin using themes, plugins, child themes, and basic CSS to shape site appearance.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze the WordPress ecosystem and hosting/platform options (including multisite vs single-site) to select an appropriate deployment strategy and domain configuration for a given project
- Apply WordPress administrative and content tasks by registering a domain, logging into the dashboard, configuring permalinks and categories, and inserting and arranging media (including using the Columns block) to produce organized posts and pages
- Demonstrate installation and configuration of themes and plugins—installing free themes, using the Plugins and Themes pages, and implementing child themes and basic CSS changes—to customize site appearance while preserving upgradeability
- Evaluate content-structure tools (custom post types, Custom Post Type UI, Hybrid Core) and create category-specific templates to support scalable site architecture and prepare for advanced templating and development
