Styling, Layout, and Scripting Essentials

This unit teaches foundational front-end skills that connect structure to presentation and behavior: core CSS for typography, color, spacing, backgrounds, selectors, and responsive layout (float, Flexbox, Grid), plus essential JavaScript programming concepts, the DOM, and debugging. Students also learn best practices for validation, accessibility, tooling, hosting, and maintainable code to prepare for building interactive web pages and more advanced client-side development.
Learning Objectives
- Apply CSS fundamentals (resets, selectors, absolute and relative units, color, typography, padding, backgrounds) and build responsive layouts using float, Flexbox, and Grid to create validated, accessible page layouts.
- Demonstrate proficiency with HTML structuring elements (lists, tables, media embedding, form controls) and implement accessibility attributes and semantic markup to improve usability and standards compliance.
- Construct and debug JavaScript programs by naming variables, using literal data types, building numeric and string expressions, working with arrays, dates, JSON, functions, and if…else branching to manipulate the DOM and handle user input.
- Evaluate and employ development workflow practices—including choosing text editors, web hosting options, code commenting, validation tools, and browser debugging techniques—to produce maintainable, standards-compliant front-end code.
