This unit examines the anatomy and physiology of major organ systems (endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, lymphatic/immune, reproductive, integumentary, musculoskeletal, and nervous) and how they interact to maintain homeostasis. Students will study blood composition and vessels, gas exchange, accessory organs, development and reproduction (including lactation), and common pathophysiologic processes to prepare for clinical application in later units.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze anatomical structures and normal physiological functions of the endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, lymphatic/immune, reproductive, integumentary, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems and explain their integrated roles in maintaining homeostasis.
- Apply knowledge of blood composition, blood vessel structure, and respiratory gas exchange to interpret basic clinical scenarios involving oxygen transport, acid–base balance, and common vascular or pulmonary impairments.
- Demonstrate understanding of human reproduction and development by describing gametogenesis, fertilization, prenatal stages, childbirth, and lactation, and evaluate how common disturbances (e.g., teratogens, endocrine dysfunctions) affect fetal and neonatal outcomes.
- Evaluate interactions between the lymphatic/immune and endocrine systems by identifying major immune cell types and lymphatic structures, explaining immune responses, and describing pathophysiology of selected endocrine and immune disorders.
