Foundations of Medical School Preparation

This 0.25 Carnegie Unit (~30 hours) introduces students to the realities of pursuing medical school, guiding them through career exploration, four-year academic planning, extracurricular strategy, the application process, and an introductory overview of the MCAT. It builds on prior exploratory lessons and prepares students for subsequent units that deepen MCAT preparation, application materials, and interview skills.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze personal motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and barriers to determine alignment with medical career pathways and identify actionable next steps
• Evaluate medical career options and entry pathways by comparing required education timelines, typical prerequisites, and labor-market outlook to prioritize appropriate specialties or roles
• Apply academic planning and extracurricular strategy to create a detailed four-year college roadmap that maps prerequisite courses, GPA targets, clinical/volunteer/research experiences, and leadership activities with timelines
• Demonstrate knowledge of the medical school admissions process and MCAT fundamentals by outlining application components, standard timelines, and a personalized MCAT study plan with target score and resources
