Alternative Medical School Pathways

This unit explores non‑traditional and complementary routes to medical school, including osteopathic (DO) admissions, dual‑degree programs, and international medical schools, while addressing the needs of nontraditional applicants and reapplicants. Students will evaluate program differences, verify licensure pathways, and create individualized application or reapplication plans that build on prior preparation and set goals for the capstone unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the structural, curricular, and admissions differences between osteopathic (DO) and allopathic (MD) medical schools and determine which features align with a student’s professional goals and learning preferences
• Compare and evaluate common dual‑degree program options (e.g., MD/PhD, MD/MPH, DO/MPH) by assessing prerequisites, timelines, funding models, and career outcomes to recommend an appropriate path based on defined objectives
• Assess accreditation status, admissions standards, cost, clinical training models, and U.S. licensure implications for international medical schools and develop a verification plan to confirm credential recognition and eligibility for residency
• Develop and apply tailored application or reapplication strategies for nontraditional and reapplicant candidates, including gap‑year planning, coursework or clinical experience remediation, MCAT re‑preparation strategies, and revision of personal statements and interview approaches
