This capstone unit focuses on integrated, organic maintenance and stewardship of ornamental roses, landscape trees and shrubs, and turf within residential and small commercial settings. Students synthesize prior skills in soil health, plant selection, and pest management to develop practical, eco-friendly maintenance plans and prepare for advanced horticulture coursework or industry certification.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze plant health cases (roses, trees/shrubs, and lawns) to identify abiotic and biotic stressors and recommend organic diagnosis and treatment options based on evidence
- Apply organic maintenance techniques—including pruning, mulching, composting, soil amendment, and mowing regimes—to create seasonal care schedules and implementation checklists for landscape sites
- Demonstrate proper establishment and hands-on maintenance procedures for organic lawns, rose beds, and landscape trees/shrubs, including soil testing interpretation, selection of cultivars/varieties, and safe application of organic inputs
- Evaluate and design a site-specific eco-friendly landscape plan that reduces chemical inputs, conserves water, promotes biodiversity, and includes measurable indicators for monitoring sustainability outcomes
