This capstone unit synthesizes sustainable maintenance practices for gardens and lawns, emphasizing integrated pest management, organic lawn care, and high-impact projects that deliver ecological and economic benefits. Students will learn to diagnose problems, avoid common unsustainable mistakes, and plan site-specific solutions for special situations.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze sustainable garden care principles to develop seasonally adjusted maintenance schedules that optimize soil health, water conservation, mulching, and composting practices
- Apply integrated pest management (IPM) methods to correctly identify common landscape pests and diseases and select appropriate cultural, biological, and least-toxic control measures
- Demonstrate organic lawn care techniques — including mowing, aeration, overseeding, and organic fertility management — and document reductions in synthetic input use
