Home Recording Foundations

This unit introduces the essential components, signal flow, and practical techniques for a functional home recording studio. Students will set up and document basic analog and digital workflows, perform multitrack and MIDI recordings, apply fundamental mic, editing, and mixing techniques, and prepare mixes for export — establishing a foundation for more advanced production and mastering in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the anatomy and signal chain of a home studio by diagramming connections among microphones, mixers/interfaces, monitors, and peripherals and justifying component choices based on project needs
• Apply microphone selection and placement techniques (including close and distant miking, lead and backup vocal approaches) and establish optimal signal levels through hands-on setup and test recordings
• Demonstrate multitrack DAW workflows and MIDI synchronization by creating tracks, recording takes, using loops, performing basic digital edits, routing effects, employing automation, and exporting sessions in appropriate file formats
• Evaluate basic mixing, dynamics, EQ, and mastering practices and document the chosen processing and routing decisions by producing a short mixed/exported sample with accompanying rationale
