This unit introduces core concepts and practical skills for creating a functional home recording environment, including the roles of equipment, cabling, mixers, and MIDI/electronic instruments. Students will build and document a basic studio setup and prepare foundational workflows used in subsequent units on tracking, editing, and mixing.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze common home recording scenarios by identifying at least three representative project types and the associated acoustic, hardware, and workflow requirements for each.
- Apply principles of gear selection by choosing microphones, audio interfaces, monitors/headphones, and essential accessories for a specified budget and use case, and justify those selections.
- Demonstrate proper studio setup and signal flow by physically connecting a microphone, instrument, audio interface, mixer (when used), monitors, and DAW, and by documenting gain staging and cable routing.
- Evaluate basic mixer and MIDI/electronic instrument workflows by configuring a small-format mixer and a MIDI controller/virtual instrument in a DAW and resolving at least three common connectivity or routing issues.
