Advanced Theory, Notation & Context

This capstone unit consolidates rhythmic, harmonic, and notational skills while introducing score literacy and real-world uses of theory. Students connect theoretical techniques (modulation, transposition, figured bass, Nashville numbers) with historical composers, movements, and technological developments to inform performance, arrangement, and improvisation.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze complex rhythmic notation—including eighth notes, dotted values, ties, and mixed note-value patterns—to accurately perform and transcribe multi-voice passages.
• Apply intervallic and harmonic skills (compound intervals, chord progressions, cadences, modulation, and transposition) and notation systems (Nashville numbers, figured bass) to reharmonize or modulate short pieces and produce playable reductions.
• Demonstrate score literacy across formats by reading and preparing parts from piano scores, vocal scores, short scores, and tablature, and by realizing figured bass and basic piano reductions for ensemble use.
• Evaluate the influence of key composers, inventors, and socio-political movements (e.g., Huygens, Schoenberg, Partch, Stockhausen, Moog; Rite of Spring; Nueva Canción; Civil Rights; Estonia; Arab Spring) on musical language, improvisation practices, and memorization strategies.
