Focused Playwriting: Character, Dialogue, Staging

This unit develops students’ abilities to narrow a play’s narrative focus and translate that focus into vivid characters, purposeful dialogue, and practical staging choices. It builds on foundational storytelling and script-format skills and prepares students to draft and revise a short play in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze a play concept to identify its central conflict, thematic focus, and the scene structure needed to sustain dramatic tension throughout the piece.
• Apply characterization techniques to create multi-dimensional characters with clear objectives, obstacles, and arcs, and produce character profiles that inform dramatic action.
• Demonstrate mastery of dialogue by composing scenes that reveal individual voice and subtext, advance plot or character, and maintain appropriate pacing and economy of language.
• Evaluate practical staging, casting, and audience considerations to make production-minded choices and apply those choices to construct an effective opening that establishes tone, stakes, and relationships.
