Producing and Promoting Plays

This capstone unit guides students through the final stages of bringing a script to life: rehearsals, premieres, promotion, and professional development as a playwright. Students will integrate practical production skills with dramaturgical judgment and lineage study to prepare scripts for public performance and future work.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze rehearsal processes and premiere logistics by creating a detailed rehearsal schedule, tech checklist, and contingency plan for a proposed production
• Apply marketing and outreach strategies to develop a promotional packet and production proposal aimed at securing a staged reading or local production
• Demonstrate synthesis of playwright best practices by revising a script to incorporate principles from the ‘Ten Things Every Playwright Should Know’ and ‘Ten Hallmarks of a Great Play,’ then presenting revisions in a mock rehearsal
• Evaluate the techniques of ten influential playwrights and produce an annotated emulation scene that identifies and applies at least two specific stylistic or structural techniques
