Editing, Postproduction, and Distribution

This unit explores the technical and creative processes of postproduction, including soundtracks, editing techniques, color correction, and the creation of master deliverables. It also examines how digitization, distribution models, audience behavior, and production decisions (casting, directing, and storytelling) affect final delivery and release strategies, bridging foundational production skills to advanced portfolio and distribution work.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the components of a soundtrack and the four problems of editing to explain how sound design and cut type (cut, dissolve, wipe, fade) support narrative continuity and audience comprehension
• Apply editing workflows and color correction/grading techniques to assemble a scene-level master that meets industry deliverable specifications and prepares for multiple distribution formats
• Demonstrate the ability to develop a postproduction and release plan that specifies file formats, masters, deliverables, and a strategy for owned, earned, and paid content across streaming and other distribution modes
• Evaluate how production-phase decisions—casting, crew assembly, directing choices, character/conflict/theme, and visual storytelling—impact editing, postproduction management, and audience engagement outcomes
