This capstone unit develops students’ ability to interpret and critique financial statements, detect and respond to fraud or misstatements, and assess cash flow and capital needs. Students will synthesize forecasting, ratio analysis, auditor reports, internal controls, and reporting standards to communicate professional conclusions and recommendations.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze financial statements and related schedules using ratio analysis, cash-flow testing, and trend/projection techniques to identify signs of financial distress, unusual gains or losses, and the health of liquidity and solvency
- Evaluate internal control weaknesses, fraud risk indicators, and auditor reports; propose corrective actions and improvements to reduce the risk of embezzlement, restatement, or misleading reporting
- Apply forecasting and projection methods and use statement of cash flows analyses to estimate future capital needs, compare financing alternatives, and reconcile net income to cash flow for decision-making
- Demonstrate professional communication by preparing concise summaries and recommendations for stakeholders that explain limits of financial reports, compliance issues, and the implications of equity and financing choices
