Investing Foundations and Decision-Making

This unit introduces core investing concepts and personal finance practices needed to begin building and managing investments, with emphasis on risk, liquidity, and how markets and companies raise capital. Students will evaluate investment vehicles (stocks, bonds, funds, real estate), use research tools, and prepare practical financial decisions that support agricultural business and future portfolio study.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the characteristics, risks, and expected returns of major investment vehicles (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, and real estate) and explain basic market mechanisms and how companies raise capital.
• Evaluate personal and business financial positions by calculating emergency reserve needs, assessing outstanding debts, and determining liquidity and cash-flow implications for investing decisions.
• Apply vetted research methods and tools (annual reports, discount brokers, investment software, reputable media) to compare investment options and identify credible versus misleading information.
• Demonstrate selection of appropriate account types, brokerage options, and an initial risk-aligned asset allocation consistent with individual goals, preferences, and agribusiness contexts to prepare for advanced portfolio construction.
