This unit examines ethically complex issues at the intersection of reproductive choice, definitions of death, end-of-life care, and the ethics of clinical research. Students will apply legal, ethical, and policy frameworks to real-world scenarios to prepare for leadership roles in healthcare administration and for the capstone unit on institutional policy and quality assurance.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze ethical, legal, and societal arguments surrounding abortion and assess healthcare administrator responsibilities for policy implementation, patient counseling, and protection of patient rights
- Evaluate clinical criteria and institutional protocols for determining death (including brain death and circulatory death) and apply appropriate documentation and communication practices consistent with legal standards
- Compare and critique models of end-of-life care (advance directives, palliative care, hospice, and assisted dying) and develop ethically defensible administrative strategies that honor patient autonomy and promote quality outcomes
- Apply historical lessons from unethical research to evaluate modern regulatory protections (informed consent, IRB oversight, risk–benefit analysis, and equipoise) and recommend safeguards for ethical clinical trial design and implementation
