Medical Systems, Pathology, and Diagnostics

This unit expands students’ medical terminology proficiency by focusing on system-specific vocabulary, common diseases and pathologies, diagnostic testing, radiologic interpretation, and relevant procedures across multiple body systems. It builds on foundational root-word and anatomy knowledge from earlier units and prepares students to synthesize terminology in clinical documentation and advanced case analyses in the following unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze root words, prefixes, and suffixes related to the nervous, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and integumentary systems to interpret and explain common conditions and pathologies
• Apply anatomical directional terms, cavities, planes, and regional anatomy (e.g., scalp layers, rotator cuff, pancreas, liver) to accurately describe locations and relationships in written and verbal clinical scenarios
• Demonstrate correct use of medical dictionary resources and standardized terminology to identify, spell, and abbreviate common diagnoses, surgical procedures, and tests for each system (including radiology and diagnostic test nomenclature)
• Evaluate diagnostic test results, radiologic findings, and pathology summaries to differentiate likely diagnoses and produce clear, professional documentation suitable for health care records
