Integrated Body Systems and Function

This unit explores cellular processes and the structure-function relationships of major body systems, including integumentary, skeletal (axial and appendicular), nervous (central and peripheral), muscular, immune, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. Students will connect metabolism, cell division, and electrophysiology to organ system function and prepare to apply this knowledge to clinical and pathological contexts in the subsequent unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze cellular processes (metabolism, cell division, and membrane potentials) and explain how they support tissue and organ function.
• Compare and contrast the structure and function of the integumentary system and the axial and appendicular skeletons, and relate those structures to protection, support, and movement.
• Demonstrate understanding of nervous system organization by distinguishing central and peripheral components and explaining principles of signal transmission and neural integration.
• Evaluate the roles of the immune (adaptive immunity), respiratory (gas exchange), digestive (enzymatic breakdown), and reproductive (labor and delivery) systems in maintaining homeostasis and predict effects of common dysfunctions.
