Regulations, Safety, and Applications

This capstone unit advances foundational flight skills into professional practice by covering regulatory compliance, privacy and security, specialized mission planning, and commercial considerations. Students will synthesize operational procedures, emergency and enforcement interactions, and business/ethical decision-making to prepare for safe, legal, and marketable drone work in agricultural and allied contexts.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze federal, proposed, and state drone regulations and privacy laws to determine compliance requirements for missions such as flights over people, micro-drones, restricted airspace, and commercial operations
• Apply safety, security, and preflight procedures—including battery management, autopilot and flight-mode selection, and mitigation of impaired-flight risks—to plan and execute mission profiles for news coverage, events, deliveries, search and rescue, and land surveying
• Demonstrate incident and stakeholder management by preparing response plans for accidents, insurance claims, enforcement interactions, and requests from aviation authorities while observing legal limits on countermeasures and data sharing
• Evaluate commercial opportunities and ethical considerations by developing a basic service plan that addresses market channels, equipment selection, liability mitigation, and privacy/security practices for monetizing drone services
