Robot Assembly and Integration

This unit guides students through integrating software and hardware to build a basic autonomous robot. Students will assemble mechanical and electrical components, program and load control code, calibrate light sensors, and apply troubleshooting techniques to achieve reliable operation.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the functions and interactions of robot electrical, mechanical, and electronic components (power systems, drive motors, controllers, sensors) by mapping signal and power flows and describing interface requirements
• Apply safe, systematic assembly and part-preparation processes (including painting, mounting whiskers, drive motors, wheels, and controllers) to construct a wheeled robot chassis that meets specified assembly tolerances
• Demonstrate software–hardware integration by writing, loading, and executing control programs and subroutines using the Basic Stamp Editor, including running built-in routines and custom code to operate motors and sensors
• Evaluate and troubleshoot hardware and software issues—such as sensor calibration, expansion board connections, and connectivity faults—by diagnosing root causes and implementing corrective actions to restore reliable autonomous behavior
