Advanced Algorithmic Applications

This unit applies and extends foundational algorithmic concepts to real-world problems involving graphs, data compression, security, and performance optimization. Students will integrate techniques for representation, analysis, and implementation to prepare for advanced coursework in software development, data science, and cybersecurity.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze graph structures and convert between visual and numeric representations (e.g., adjacency matrices/lists), then apply graph algorithms to compute shortest routes, PageRank-like scores, and link-analysis metrics
• Apply algorithm design and optimization techniques to implement and compare solutions for data compression, large-number multiplication, edit-distance reduction, and fair resource division, selecting approaches based on correctness and time/space complexity
• Demonstrate methods for protecting and identifying data by implementing one-way functions, basic cryptographic primitives, unique identifier schemes, and by assessing implications of automation and the halting problem for system security and reliability
• Evaluate execution models, debugging/support strategies, spatial data considerations, and ethical impacts of automated responses; recommend practical optimizations and safeguards for deploying algorithms at scale
