This unit guides students through advanced, play-based ideation methods—doodling, improvisation, story thinking, and artist’s books—while integrating generative AI as a collaborative design partner. Students will iterate ideas through guided exercises and synthesize outcomes into narrative-rich artifacts that bridge conceptual exploration and portfolio-ready documentation.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze design briefs and creative prompts to select appropriate play-based ideation strategies (doodling, improvisation, story thinking, artist’s books) and identify where generative AI can augment exploration
- Apply generative AI tools in tandem with analog sketching and rapid exercises to generate, iterate, and refine multiple architectural/interior design concept variations
- Demonstrate playful improvisation and structured doodling techniques to investigate form, spatial relationships, and narrative within design explorations
- Evaluate and document iterative outcomes by producing story-driven artist’s books or portfolio pages that communicate process, rationale, and recommended next steps for capstone work
