AI Civilization, Synthetic Life, and Design

This unit examines how advanced AI, synthetic data, and automated laboratories reshape biology, materials, energy, and business design—creating abundance, new risks, and novel workplaces. Students synthesize technical, ethical, economic, and social perspectives to anticipate consequences and design practical responses that bridge current capabilities and the governance and deployment discussions in the final unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze multiple technological trajectories (e.g., self-play, synthetic data, robo-labs, protein design, miniaturized robot brains) and produce scenario analyses that predict economic, workforce, and ethical impacts under at least two takeoff-speed assumptions
• Evaluate technical and ethical trade-offs of synthetic biology, digital replicas, and AI-driven discovery (including protein engineering, genetic landscaping, and synthetic data) by identifying at least three potential risks and proposing three corresponding mitigation strategies
• Apply systems-design thinking to develop an integrated business or product roadmap that leverages AI-enabled energy, materials, and automation (such as solar, natural hydrogen, digital coating, and robo-labs), including measurable metrics for scalability, cost, safety, and societal benefit
• Demonstrate effective stakeholder communication by composing a 1–2 page policy or organizational brief recommending operational changes for human–AI collaboration, workforce transition, and governance that addresses psychosocial impacts and regulatory considerations
