Laptop Care, Security, and Maintenance

This unit focuses on end-user and technician practices for keeping PCs and laptops secure, reliable, and ergonomically sound. Students learn routine maintenance, power and battery management, safe software/media handling, peripherals and cabling, Windows updates and shutdown procedures, and professional/theft-prevention practices to build on foundational hardware skills and prepare for advanced maintenance tasks.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common security and malware risks related to downloads, removable media, wireless connectivity, and user behavior, and implement preventative measures such as disabling unneeded radios, applying antivirus, and using privacy filters.
• Apply power, battery, and thermal management techniques—including changing power modes, responding to low-battery warnings, connecting to power, and monitoring temperature—to extend device lifespan and maintain reliable operation.
• Demonstrate routine system upkeep skills by organizing files, managing removable media safely, keeping Windows and antivirus software up-to-date, performing proper shutdowns, and avoiding unnecessary OS reinstalls.
• Evaluate ergonomic setup, peripheral selection, cabling organization, and theft-prevention options (locks, ID stickers, returns service) and recommend professional practices and continuing-learning strategies for end users and technicians.
