This unit examines the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal and integumentary systems and the major transport, gas exchange, and digestive systems—covering the heart, blood, vessels, lungs, and digestive tract including mechanical and chemical processes. It builds on cellular and tissue-level concepts from earlier units and prepares students to study system integration, regulation, and common pathologies in subsequent units.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze the structure and function of the musculoskeletal and integumentary systems by comparing muscle types, mechanisms of contraction, and skin layers, and predict functional consequences of common injuries or conditions
- Demonstrate identification of cardiac chambers, valves, and major blood vessels using models or diagrams and trace the pathways of pulmonary and systemic circulation
- Apply knowledge of blood composition and circulatory physiology to explain oxygen and nutrient transport, hemostasis, and the impact of disorders (e.g., anemia, atherosclerosis) on tissue perfusion
- Evaluate respiratory and digestive system anatomy and physiology by describing mechanics of breathing, gas exchange, and stages of mechanical and chemical digestion and relating dysfunctions to clinical scenarios
