Workplace Safety Systems and Controls

This unit develops practical skills for implementing and managing comprehensive workplace health and safety systems, emphasizing hazard identification, control selection, and regulatory compliance. Students will practice inspections, audits, incident investigation, contractor and employee management, and the application of hazard-specific controls (e.g., fire, asbestos, COSHH, machine guarding, ergonomics) while preparing to integrate a recognized safety management system.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze workplace hazards and exposures using risk assessment techniques and prioritize controls according to the hierarchy of controls
• Apply inspection, audit, and incident-investigation procedures to identify nonconformities and develop corrective action plans
• Implement safety management elements including policy statements, contractor management, training, communication strategies, and return-to-work considerations for employee welfare
• Evaluate and select hazard-specific prevention and mitigation options (fire protection, asbestos controls, COSHH/chemical controls, machine guards, ergonomics, substance-use policies, and insurance/financial transfer) for realistic workplace scenarios
