This unit introduces core web development concepts and tools, covering front-end markup and styling, fundamental programming constructs in JavaScript, basic back-end roles, and the local/hosted environments used to build and deploy sites. Students will gain hands-on experience with HTML, CSS (including the box model and Flexbox), basic JavaScript programming, development/debugging tools, and an overview of PHP/MySQL, accessibility, and security considerations to prepare for deeper application development in subsequent units.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate the ability to create semantic HTML5 documents and apply CSS rules, box model principles, sizing units, and Flexbox to build accessible, responsive page layouts
- Configure and use a local web development environment, evaluate web hosting options, and deploy simple static or dynamic pages
- Apply JavaScript fundamentals — variables, expressions, control flow (if statements), functions, objects, arrays, events, web storage, and basic asynchronous concepts — to implement interactive features and client-side form validation
- Analyze basic server-side concepts by describing how PHP and MySQL interact in a web app, using browser and server-side debugging techniques, and identifying elementary web security and accessibility best practices
