Site, Envelope, Systems & Procurement

This unit develops intermediate competencies in site preparation, building envelope assemblies, structural remedies, and interior systems and finishes for self-build and renovation projects. It builds on introductory design and planning and prepares students to sequence construction, coordinate trades, specify materials and manage procurement, permitting, insurance, and quality for execution in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze site conditions, earthworks, and structural issues to produce a prioritized site-preparation and remediation plan with required permits and safety considerations.
• Apply principles of thermal, moisture, sound control, and airtightness to select and specify insulation, roofing, wall, and floor assemblies that meet performance and code requirements.
• Demonstrate the ability to develop a phase-level project schedule and budget that includes procurement strategies, contractor/subcontractor coordination, insurance/warranty needs, and cost-saving opportunities.
• Evaluate and justify selections of building systems and finishes — including electrical connections, lighting, kitchens, bathrooms, alternative power, and conservatory or conversion components — against criteria for code compliance, sustainability, and reuse.
