Operational Safety and Risk Management

This unit develops practical skills to translate legal guidance into workplace controls, conduct thorough risk assessments, and implement safety management systems for common health and safety hazards. It builds on foundational concepts and prepares students to draft policy, measure performance, and lead implementation in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze relevant legal guidance and regulatory frameworks to determine organizational health and safety obligations and to inform policy decisions
• Apply systematic risk assessment methods to identify, evaluate, and prioritize hazards across transport, manual handling, machinery, electricity, fire, chemicals, and radiation, recommending appropriate controls
• Demonstrate selection and development of recognized safety management systems, emergency procedures, KPIs, and process safety measures to control operational risks
• Prepare a compliant health and safety policy and communication plan that integrates risk assessment findings, KPI monitoring, human factors, and emergency response requirements
