This unit builds on foundational safety concepts to focus on practical assessment tools, regulatory guidance, and performance improvement strategies used in healthcare workplaces. Students will learn to use technical calculators and toolkits, apply legislative and international guidance, engage consultants appropriately, and design prioritized corrective plans while avoiding common assessment errors.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze workplace tasks and environments using MAC, ART, noise exposure, and hand-arm vibration calculators to quantify risk levels and prioritize control measures
- Apply relevant Texas and international occupational health and safety legislation and guidance to develop compliant written risk assessments and control plans for fire, asbestos, manual handling, and work-at-height hazards
- Demonstrate selection and effective engagement of occupational safety and health resources and consultants and accurately interpret technical tool outputs to justify recommended controls
- Evaluate organizational health and safety performance using improvement frameworks and stress-management tools to produce a prioritized implementation plan that addresses common pitfalls in risk assessment
