Preproduction, Post, and Business Essentials

This unit integrates advanced preproduction planning, on-set preparation, introductory postproduction techniques, and core business practices for independent film projects. Students will expand on foundational filmmaking skills by preparing cast and crew, mapping camera and lighting plans, executing basic editing and sound design tasks, and developing financing, insurance, and distribution strategies that move a project toward exhibition.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze scripts and production requirements to produce comprehensive shot lists, storyboards, location noise assessments, and camera/lighting plans that align with schedule and budget constraints
• Apply auditioning, actor-mentoring, and on-set preparation techniques to cast and ready performers for a scheduled shoot, including documenting roles and positions for crew coordination
• Demonstrate basic postproduction workflows by performing linear and nonlinear edits, integrating sound design (SFX, backgrounds, analog/digital), adding music and titles, and delivering a cohesive edited scene or screener
• Evaluate financing, insurance, legal, and distribution options — including production company formation, domestic versus cross-border considerations, festival submission, and screener delivery — and produce a concise pitch/marketing and release plan
