Foundations of Music Theory

This unit introduces core music theory concepts including historical origins, basic notation, rhythm and meter, pitch organization, and introductory harmony. Students will build practical skills in reading and writing notation, constructing major scales and triads, recognizing key signatures, and analyzing how tempo, timbre, and simple contrapuntal or genre-specific elements (e.g., blues) shape musical meaning, preparing them for deeper harmony and composition studies in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze key historical developments (e.g., Pythagoras, Gregorian chant) and foundational concepts to explain their influence on Western music notation and theory in written or oral form.
• Apply rhythmic notation skills—including note and rest values, dotted rests, simple time signatures, syncopation, and pick-up notes—to accurately notate and perform short rhythmic passages.
• Demonstrate the ability to read notes on the staff with common clefs, construct major scales using whole/half-step patterns, identify major key signatures via the circle of fifths, and build/label triads and basic intervals from notation.
• Evaluate the effect of tempo, tone color, basic contrapuntal textures, and stylistic elements (such as blues inflections) on musical character by critiquing audio examples and recommending interpretive adjustments.
