Graphic Design Foundations and Process

This unit introduces core design principles, the design process, and professional practices to prepare students for project work in the Graphic Design and Illustration pathway. Students will learn empathy-driven research, sketching and grid systems, brand alignment, tool selection, collaboration, and quality-focused evaluation to support future applied units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze client and audience needs using empathy techniques to develop clear project briefs and measurable design goals
• Apply foundational design principles (balance, unity, movement, hierarchy, alignment, space) and select appropriate grid types to create pencil sketches and low-fidelity compositions
• Demonstrate professional workflow practices by selecting and using tools (electronic pencils/tablets, automated tools), articulating areas of specialization, and applying quality-over-quantity standards
• Evaluate design solutions from both macro and micro perspectives and justify design decisions based on brand personality, purpose, tone, and message
