ACT Strategies: Math & Reading

This unit reinforces core ACT test-taking strategies and strengthens targeted math and English skills needed for higher performance on the ACT. Students practice timed problem solving (ratios, exponents, logs, functions, geometry, order of operations), passage analysis, grammar, and persuasive writing while learning to evaluate practice-test results and optimize pacing and guessing approaches.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze ACT test structure and apply effective test-taking strategies (timing, educated guessing, answer-choice immersion, and scoring) to create and use a personalized pacing and guessing plan during practice tests
• Demonstrate accurate, efficient solution of ACT-level math problems involving ratios and proportions, exponents and logarithms, functions, quadrilaterals/polygons/circles, and order of operations under timed conditions
• Translate written English scenarios into mathematical expressions and equations and solve resulting word problems to support quantitative reasoning on the ACT
• Evaluate and produce clear written responses by identifying argument structure in comparative and experimental passages, modeling standard English conventions, crafting effective hooks, and defending a perspective in short constructed responses
