Designing Hands‑On STEM Instruction

This unit guides students to synthesize inquiry, engineering challenges, maker technologies, and community resources into classroom-ready STEM lessons. Learners will plan, prototype, and assess hands-on and digital learning experiences that integrate collaboration, formative assessment, and real-world connections to prepare K‑12 students for future STEM pathways.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze STEM inquiry and engineering design processes and apply them to develop at least two lesson plans or challenge prototypes that include testable hypotheses, controlled variables, and clear assessment criteria
• Design and construct multiple low-cost hands-on engineering challenges (e.g., tallest tower, catapult, egg drop, contraption) using recycled and common materials while documenting materials lists, safety procedures, and success criteria
• Integrate and demonstrate the use of digital and maker technologies (block-based physical programming, Tinkercad/3D printing, digital editing suites, calculator and remote-control tools) by producing at least one student-product or simulation that supports instruction
• Evaluate and curate community and digital resources (university, nonprofit, corporate websites, and citizen science communities) and implement peer-evaluation and collaborative student-role strategies in at least two learning activities to support authentic assessment and future pathway awareness
