CPA Exam Foundations and Responsibilities

This unit introduces the professional role, responsibilities, and ethical expectations of a CPA while preparing students for the CPA Exam through eligibility, application, format, and study strategy instruction. It also establishes foundational technical knowledge in accounting, financial reporting, auditing/engagements, internal controls, information systems, and basic tax concepts to support success in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the role and added responsibilities of a CPA, including ethical obligations, agency relationships, and confidentiality requirements, by identifying applicable professional standards and illustrating responses to three practice scenarios
• Apply CPA exam requirements and test-taking strategies by completing an eligibility and application checklist, creating a timed study schedule, and demonstrating effective approaches to multiple-choice and task-based questions
• Demonstrate foundational technical knowledge of accounting and assurance by explaining basic accounting concepts, standards for financial statements, business combinations, engagement types, and audit/review procedures through problem-based assessments
• Evaluate company controls and information systems relevant to assurance and compliance by conducting a risk assessment that addresses internal controls, IT security/privacy, and individual tax compliance, and recommending at least three control improvements
