Advanced Composition Techniques and Production

This unit develops practical composition, arrangement, and production skills that bridge music theory and real-world music distribution. Students will practice melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and storytelling techniques while learning workflows for scoring, preparing performances, producing sounds, and distributing music.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze harmonic and melodic materials by identifying chord progressions, harmonic and melodic minor usages, cadences, neighboring tones, appoggiatura, and atonal characteristics in given excerpts.
• Apply melodic, rhythmic, and compositional techniques—such as the pentatonic scale, effort shapes, counterpoint, back/front phrasing, syncopation, and basic jazz idioms—to produce original short compositions and focused writing exercises.
• Demonstrate practical production and distribution workflows by assembling appropriate gear, managing composition files, producing target instrument sounds (including free-reed instruments), preparing scores, and uploading releases to platforms such as CD Baby, DistroKid, Broadjam, or Epidemic Sound.
• Evaluate and refine works for performance and media by combining storytelling and mood devices, preparing live-performance plans and scores, using ear-training and mixing strategies to improve mixes, and making revision decisions based on criteria for clarity and audience purpose.
