This unit examines certification pathways, career options, and the payer-specific claims processes that medical billers and coders must master. Students will learn to verify benefits, apply ICD and modifier rules, manage preauthorization and appeals, and apply compliance and ethical principles to protect reimbursement and professional integrity, building on foundational coding knowledge and preparing for advanced claim adjudication.

• Analyze certification options, prerequisites, time commitments, and continuing education requirements to select an appropriate credential and create a personalized test-preparation plan
• Apply payer-specific billing procedures—including verifying patient benefits, using ICD basics, applying modifiers correctly, and managing referrals/preauthorizations—for commercial, Medicare, and other government payers
• Demonstrate compliance and ethical decision-making by identifying fraud/abuse risks, documenting medical necessity, following contract specifics and ACO considerations, and implementing strategies to avoid improper shifting of blame
• Evaluate claim resolution and revenue-recovery strategies by determining when to file appeals, preparing appeal documentation, identifying unbundling/compliance issues, and locating opportunities to maximize reimbursement
