Emerging Technologies and Cyber Risk

This unit examines how emerging technologies (IoT, smart cities, and quantum computing) reshape the threat landscape and explores regulatory frameworks, standards, and risk‑management approaches used to defend converged physical-digital systems. Students will connect technical vulnerabilities to organizational strategies, tools (encryption, digital conversion), and public‑private governance needed to promote cybersecurity and economic resilience.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber‑physical system architectures to identify common vulnerabilities, likely threat vectors, and potential targets in smart cities and converged environments
• Evaluate relevant standards and regulatory frameworks (including NIST guidance and recent SEC and industry regulations) to determine requirements and best practices for organizational compliance and governance
• Apply risk management principles and organizational strategies — including encryption, cryptography, and digital conversion tools — to create a prioritized mitigation plan that addresses people, process, and technology
• Demonstrate the ability to map common cyber threats to appropriate defensive tools and cooperative measures (public‑private partnerships, information sharing) that enhance economic resilience and enterprise preparedness
