Environmental Policy and Sustainable Solutions

This capstone unit synthesizes environmental policy, justice, pollution case studies, and applied sustainability strategies to address complex natural resource challenges. Students examine international and domestic agreements, technological and management solutions, and risk‑assessment methods to prepare for further study or careers in agriculture, food, and natural resources.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the roles, mechanisms, and effectiveness of international and U.S. environmental agreements and conventions (e.g., Montreal Protocol, UNFCCC, BRS, CMS, World Heritage, Mediterranean Convention) in addressing transboundary pollution, biodiversity conservation, and climate change.
• Evaluate human–environment interactions and environmental justice issues using case studies (e.g., environmental racism, Gulf of Mexico dead zone, ocean gyres, tracking dramatic change) to identify root causes, affected populations, and policy responses.
• Apply sustainable management practices and technologies—including integrated pest management, sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, energy conservation, wind energy, and fuel cell technologies—to design interventions that reduce environmental impacts and enhance resource resilience.
• Develop evidence-based risk assessments and mitigation plans for pollution, hazardous waste, transboundary groundwater, traffic congestion, and unregulated logging that incorporate the precautionary principle, measurable sustainability goals, and stakeholder perspectives.
